Dear Parents and fifth graders,
We’ve been working hard in social studies. Today the fifth graders took a social studies quiz over democracy and some basic economic principles. Last Thursday, we watched a brief video about truth in advertising. In a free enterprise, consumers expect producers to be honest in their ads, but a lot of the students found ads to be less than honest. The students wrote a paragraph about what they learned about the tricks advertisers use to persuade young consumers. Please look for this essay in your child’s Friday folder today. Caveat emptor!
Mrs. MacCallum, our school counselor, visited with the fifth graders on Tuesday to discuss internet safety, digital citizenship and questions to ask your self before making a post or comment online. Mrs. MacCallum emphasized the importance of staying safe and appropriate on the internet. There is a handout with information to continue this discussion at home.
We would like to congratulate Elsie (5G) and Kasen (5H), our classrooms' Student Council Representatives. All students are invited to communicate ideas for Student Council with Elsie and Kasen. We’ve put a suggestion box in our classrooms so Elsie and Kasen can share our ideas during their meetings. Students did a great job participating in this election. We had fourteen students run for class representative, and we would like to encourage all students to find ways to share ideas with STUCO.
A Message from Mrs. Swearngin, the Technology Teacher: All fifth graders signed in this week to their typing.com accounts. I would like them to sign in using their Google account, which is different than last year. This account will follow them the remainder of the Good Shepherd career. We talked in class about proper hand placement and avoiding "chicken pecking.” Students should practice typing whenever possible so they become more proficient!
Please look in this week’s Friday folder for a flyer about Chat N Chew. The fifth graders’ novel is Lunch Money, by one of my favorite young adult authors, Andrew Clements. Virtus trained volunteers are always needed. Please use the QR code on the flyer to register your student or volunteer to participate.
Last Thursday, Mrs. Ord emailed fourth and fifth grade families about brining recorders to music class. If you ordered a recorder and/or book with school supplies, those will be handed out in music class. Fifth graders will be starting recorders next week. If you ordered a recorder yourself and it won’t arrive until after October 2, please contact Mrs. Ord at sord@gsshawnee.org.
