In math, the fifth graders have been using two formulas to solve for volume of rectangular prisms. Using formulas is great preparation for middle school and beyond! The problems have gotten pretty complex, asking students to find the volume of figures with multiple boxes combined (picture L-Shaped boxes or boxes shaped like stairs). Students sometimes need to calculate the various dimensions before they can solve the problems. Students will take the chapter 16 check over volume on Monday.
In science, fifth graders have started their paper airplane unit. In this unit we will be talking about factors that affect the flight of a paper airplane. The students will come up with 3-4 different designs that interest them. We will take a closer look at each design to determine which one each student will create. To wrap up the unit each student will make the airplane that they chose, and we will fly them in the gym. Students may practice making their airplane at home, but the one that they fly at school must be made at school. Please look for a yellow Summer Skills Review Book order form in your oldest student’s Friday Folder. Studies have shown that students experience “summer learning loss” after being out of school for as few as two weeks. Students can help retain skills learned in fifth grade by practicing their math and reading for 15-30 minutes three or four times a week. If you are unsure of which grade level to order, please speak to your student’s teacher. Students who return their completed Summer Skills Review Books in August will receive a treat.
It’s time for a uniform check! Please make sure that your student is following Good Shepherd’s dress code by taking time to check your daughter’s skirt length and making sure your son’s haircut follows the school’s policy.
Have an excellent weekend, Cindi Easton and Renée Hance
