As a part of the Federal Food Program, Good Shepherd is required to organize a Wellness Program. The Wellness Committee meets annually to update the school plan.
Nutritional Education:
5 hours of classroom nutrition education will be provided each year for all students as part of the comprehensive health education curriculum that focuses on understanding the relationship between personal behavior and health and as learning experiences integrated through the curriculum in subject areas such as math, science, language arts and social studies. Current nutrition education materials will be prominent displayed in the cafeteria and will be changed every 9 weeks. (Lunch Program Coordinator)
Families will be provided with information that encourages them to teach their children about health and nutrition and to provide nutritious meals for their families. The newsletters will be sent with the school lunch calendar quarterly. (Lunch Program Coordinator)
Physical Activity:
The school will encourage all students to become more physically active through involvement in school programs. (School Staff/PTO)
The school will utilize a Physical Education program to teach students about involvement in physical fitness. (P.E. Teacher/School Nurse)
The school promotes physical activity by encouraging students to play during fitness breaks. (Classroom Teacher)
The school promotes physical activity by having a Running Club. (School Staff and parent volunteers)
The PTO promotes physical activity by hosting 2 skating parties a year. (PTO)

Integrated School Based Wellness:
The school nurse will place vision and hearing screening information in the school newsletter to better inform parents.(School Nurse and Secretary)
The school will hold a parent education night for fifth graders and their parents to discuss young adolescence and body changes. (Classroom Teachers and School Nurse)
